Dr. Maria F. Benetos, D.O.

Healthy Brain, Healthy Body, Healthy Life Dr. Maria Benetos is a board certified adult psychiatrist and geriatric psychiatrist with expertise in the treatment of all mood, psychotic, substance use and neurodegenerative-related disorders in the adult and geriatric population. Dr. Benetos understands that one's psychiatric wellbeing is a diverse interconnected system and treatment requires a multidimensional approach to achieve optimal function. Dr. Benetos completed medical school at NY College of Osteopathic Medicine. She began residency training in General Surgery at Northwell University Medical Center. Recognizing and understanding the important connection between the brain and the body, propelled Dr. Benetos into the study of psychiatry. Dr. Benetos completed psychiatric residency training at Zucker Hillside Hospital at LIJ Medical Center. She then completed a geriatric psychiatry fellowship at Zucker Hillside Hospital. Dr. Benetos further specializes in the management of behavioral disturbances associated with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's Dementia and Parkinson's Disease. Currently, Dr. Maria Benetos is an attending at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, one of Catholic Health System's thriving hospitals in Smithtown, Suffolk County, NY. There, she is responsible for the acute care of psychiatric patients in the inpatient, medical, and emergency department settings while fostering the education of medical and physician assistant students.
